There are those that complain about Mariah's diva antics, but then you hear songs like this one and you realize she's earned her diva spot. That's not an excuse for some of those actions, of course, but you can hear that she's in the upper echelon of entertainers who can deliver a sweet love song as well as throw things at assistants.
The vocal gymnastics are present with constant overdubs of her own voice, but when you've got an instrument as versatile as hers, do you really want a generic back up singer to bring it down. She soars even in the low range of her voice. The only singer that can back up Mariah Carey is Mariah Carey.
She is mining familiar territory with the pretty love song, but it's fertile ground so that shouldn't be a perceptual problem. There will probably be the perception that she's singing to hubby Nick Cannon, but if we do the math right (and it's possible that we've gotten it wrong), this was recorded before their whirlwind romance and marriage. That's okay; it'll get the tabloids talking.
