Random Lyric:
It's your birthday so I know you want to ride out
Even if we only go to my house
The title will automatically have people either wanting to hear it or wanting to avoid it, depending on their personal sensibilities. No matter how many clean (or in this reviewers case "super clean") mix, naming your song that can involve that complex dynamic. On Ciara's new "Love, Sex, Magic" she hid it within the context of a larger concept, but there are still those that dismiss it out of hand.
Then here comes Jeremih, who has a marginal song that might explain a few things. When you have a song that's just passable, is that the reason to put "Birthday Sex" in the title and the hook? Music critics might look at it as trying to salvage a track, rather than improving the track itself. The music for this song could have been put together on Garage Band like Polow da Don did with Usher's "Love In The Club." The vocals are the same thing we continue to complain about in R&B music, namely that young male singers continue to go for the fake tenor sound which sounds strained rather than passionate.
The lyrics aren't as explicit as they could have been, which is a point in it's favor. At least the artist didn't go the route of artists like The-Dream or Akon. If you listen to their original versions as opposed to the radio versions, then you know. If you haven't, you're in for quite a shock. This one's just okay.
